Rafael Nadal is thru to meet up with Berdych on Saturday. He is on fire this hardcourt season. The Spaniard improved to a 21-10 H2H against Roger Federer. He beat the Swiss 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
In set 1, at *5-5 when Rafa was serving; Roger had hit a cross court forehand was too powerful for Rafa to put the ball back in play. Roger was able to break at this point and won the first set 7-5 with a superb backhand winner. It definitely seemed Roger Federer was playing vintage-Federer (sad to his decline in the sport, but I wont deny its existence.) The Swiss was able to pull off 18 winners compared to Rafa’s 7.
Rafa was clearly disgruntled that he had lost the first set, so it was obvious he was going to play better in the second. For the most part he did! At 5-4 (Roger was serving) Rafa had a couple of set points and was able to close the set with a wicked forehand.
A pumped up Rafa took onto the court in set 3 with all the momentum on his side. He broke Roger in his first game. Rafa was constantly moving Roger side-to-side exposing his backhand which uncharacteristically was working pretty well against Rafa. It did take the Spaniard 5 match points. Here’s the thing–>Roger could have officially challenged Rafa’s match point which was called in. It was indeed out! So Rafa got a major break there! I will admit that I did enjoy seeing Roger play with a lot of firepower; I don’t him to retire just yet!
